Good Concept, Poor Execution...

I bought a solo "Tequila GTX" (an earlier version of the "Falcon" ) three years ago...and it's been sitting in my garage ever since. Never been tempted to use it once, and am about to sell it on Craig's List. There are several problems with this kayak which clearly have not been addressed in the newer models, judging from the reviews and from the photos on this website. Problem number 1: no proper handholds. It would be so much easier to lift and maneuver the two (or three) sections of this kayak if they simply attached handholds on either side of each section and placed them correctly so that the kayak was balanced when you pick it up. Problem number 2: as others have mentioned, the clips that hold the sections together are made of plastic. I haven't broken mine - but only because I've only assembled the kayak once. You're tempted to pull them tight because there's a considerable gap between the sections when you put them together (1/2" or so), but the clips are so flimsy that they're bound to break if you pull hard on them. I'm going to buy a carbon fiber canoe next season - far more expensive, but also much, much nicer to paddle and half the weight. I'll just have to stick it on top of the car instead of carrying it inside, but they only weigh 20 to 25 pounds so I can handle it.

Mixed Review

Ordered the falcon solo kayak due to the size and the ease of the modular experience. I went through a third party website due to having to pay a large amount in tax to get the product to the uk. The TradeInn website calculated the tax in for you which the Point 65 website did not.

It is perfect to fit into a smal car which is exactly what I wanted it for. Using it on water the two occasions I have been out in it it was great. Enjoyable kayak and easy use. Exactly what I wanted.

However on second use the ‘snap tap buckle’ broke. It is plastic and is there to essentially tighten the kayak together. I dont find this acceptable and can see from reviews that it is a common fault. The third party company wanted me to send the whole kayak back and when I wasnt going to do this they closed the case and stated it was misuse and not a fault. Easy to see in reviews here that it is in fact a fault.

I did persue it with Point 65 direct who said it was considered a ‘wear and tear’’ part which is an interesting concept when it broke after 2 uses. However they have thankfully agreed to send out a snap tap buckle free if charge on this occasion. However in the future this will cost about £40 each time it needs replacing which is quite an expense considering what I paid for the product and the tax to ship in the first place.

So in all a bit of a mixed review. They kayak is great for what I wanted it to be for size and on the water. However I dont believe the snap tap buckle is fit for purpose and fear it msy result in quite a bit of money to replace on a regular occasion.

1.5 years with Kayak

I purchased the Falcon tandem August 2021. My boyfriend and I are under the maximum weight limit by 30-40 lbs but no way is this tandem meant for 2 people, it immediately started filling with water in the back, like sinking. I tried it with my 5 year old nephew and the same thing happened. I admit the company was generous in sending a replacement middle piece in case it was faulty but the same issues happened. I imagine to kayak with 2 people, you’d have to be 2 small-below average adults. Now as a solo kayak, it’s fantastic. Still expect to get a wet butt because the seam isn’t water tight. The portability of this kayak is the best. It easily fits in my mini Cooper. It’s hardy. I broke 2 straps rather quickly. You cannot tighten it to be a tight seam. I have a friend that has a kayak similar to this one and it is 1000% better. Better snaps and better seams. Also her tandem works fine for my bf and I. Her brand was the snap kayak, which doesn’t exist anymore. Overall, I regret purchasing the tandem. To return the pieces, I would have had to pay to shop them back with no guarantee of getting my money back depending on the state of the kayak. I love the kayak as a solo.

Falling in love

The Falcon… small and light and easy in still water. I had initial challenges - broke 1 of the Snap-Tap clips on 2nd use :( I have come to realize these clips are essentially cosmetic, what’s really holding the two parts together with strength is the hook and groove on the bottom that you put the parts together with - the clips simply hold them in place, and there will be a space between the two parts of the kayak, it will not be snug. If you try to make it snug, you will break those clips.

It is also a bit of a challenge to take apart, I’m finding it easier to disassemble in shallow water. Like others, I wish there were a second handle on each of the parts, it’s hard to get purchase if you are a small framed person like I am but it’s not that bad!

The two parts of this solo unit fit so easily into my little hatchback, what a dream. I can load in in five minutes, load out and assemble in less than 10, and be on the water. So much easier than having to cope with a roof rack. Plus I was looking at having to get all that assembled, so I decided to spend the money instead on a modular rather than a rack system and a cheaper kayak, and I’m so glad I did.

Where I live there are several lakes and also both slow and fast rivers. I am not seeing this little kayak as sturdy enough for even the smallest river rapid, if I choose to go out in it on a river I will get out and guide it down the rapids. So definitely think of this as an exclusively still water vehicle. But it feels so secure, so light and easy to maneuver out on lakes - note that I’m 120lb, which may make a difference. It’s an excellent paddle that comes with the unit as well.

Other reviews mention that your hands do naturally want to hit the Clips on other models, which can be a little annoying, but I’m just learning to lift my hands a little higher as I paddle. The seat is comfortable. Lots of ways to adjust body position with the foot grooves and seat strap.

I think as P65 gets the reviews back on some of these, perhaps they could make a few changes like all metal clips, clips in a place or designed such that they aren’t knocking hands while paddling, and having an extra grip on each part for carrying, but all in all it is a beautifully designed and thoroughly enjoyable craft.

Since I’m new to kayaking, I can definitively say that this little Falcon is a game changer for me! I live in some fairly remote foothills in Arkansas, USA, and I imagine no one has ever seen one of these, so when they ask, I will spread the word!
